A Great Solution for Stained or Torn T-Shirts

25 August 2009 198 views View Comments

guitarI have two sons, and The Husband, that means a lot of stained or torn t-shirts. While I am getting better at stain removal I am not magic and we end up with a lot of unwearable t-shirts. (I only need so many dust clothes.)

I was so excited to see this idea in Family Fun Magazine I almost headed to the craft store immediately. (If you are new to this blog you should know that I am in no way gifted with craftiness, so a trip to the craft store means I am really inspired.)

The idea is to use a fabric applique to cover up a stain or personalize a plain tee you found on clearance.

You can download a template for trees, a bike, a guitar or a sharktree

Then trace the template on a piece of fabric (some you bought or another old/stained shirt) and and a sheet of fusible fabric webbing (I am not yet sure what this is but I plan to find out soon), then cut them out.

Then you just follow the webbing package’s instructions to adhere the homemade applique to your shirt.

The magazine also showed a cute tee with a flower design cut out of the front, layered over a long sleeve tee. What a great idea especially with fall on the way.

Do you have any other great ways to reuse or refashion stained clothing? I am always looking for new ideas.

    Katie,
I have been making appliques for alot of my girls shirts. I get a thrift store tee and do the applique using scraps. It's alot cheaper than gymboree or the tailored tadpole and it's fun, too! I will post another link for a tutorial on how to do applique without needleturn!!! I looked at the tutorial and learned how to do it. It gives a nice finished looking edge. But now the trend includes a rough looking edge sometimes. Whatever floats your boat. For boys, the frayed edge might be “cuter (is that a word?).”
Here's a link for some cool crafty things to do with kids. It might inspire you. But hey-don't get too busy with crafting, we need you to post lots of deals!!!

Here's how to do appliques without needleturn. It's very easy! And it looks really nice. I don't even use a template or a pattern. I just use some cardstock and make up my own design. See the tailored tadpole for some ideas. I did cupcakes for my girls (their birthday is next month) and I did the little bird on a branch seen on the link above. And I bought a couple of items from Gyboree for my girls and I made up a tee shirt to go with one of the skirts. It was a cake stand with a cake on top.You can get ideas from just looking at a couple of stores or some website for high-end boutique clothing for kids.
